Arkanoid online is a video game for arcade system boards, developed by Taito company in 1986. The game gave the name to the whole genre of the games alike.
The player controls a small platform-bat, which he can move horisontally from one wall to another, putting it under the ball preventing its falling down. Hitting the brick with the ball leads to destruction of the brick. After all the bricks on the level are destroyed, the player shifts to a next level with a new set of bricks. Anyway there is some variety: definite bricks should be hit several times, sometimes flying enemies appear that make the ball bounce, hitting some bricks makes special prizes fall down from them - the prize will activate if you catch it with the bat.
On the last, 33-rd level the player is to beat the "boss" of the game named Doh. Here you use all the bats left, since there are no more new levels after this one.
4 versions of Arkanoid game have been released for arcade system boards: Arkanoid (1986), Tournament Arkanoid (1986), Revenge of Doh (1987, Arkanoid II), and Arkanoid Returns (1997) as well.
In the mid and late eighties versions for different 8-bits PCs (Amstrad CPC, Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Commodore 64, MSX, ZX Spectrum), for game consoles (Game Boy, NES), as well as for 16-bit PCs (Amiga, Apple IIgs, Atari ST) were released. SNES version was released in 1997 under the name "Arkanoid: Doh it again". In Japan a version Arkanoid returns was released in 1999 for Sony Playstation.
